The Unified Processing for Robotic Icy Terrain Exploration (UPRITE) task is part of a larger JPL initiative to use machine learning and reasoning engine algorithms to enable physically capable robotic systems such as JPL’s RoboSimian or ATHLETE to traverse the similarly complex and dynamically changing environments of the Earth’s Arctic region as well as our solar system’s Ocean Worlds. Bringing situational understanding and reasoning ability to robots when provided incomplete, inconsistent, and contradictory data will be key to reliable and productive operations in those challenging environments.
