Conceptual design for the front end of a possible Mars Ascent Vehicle and Sample Cache interface.
Mars Sample Return (MSR) is a mission concept for possible future return of rock samples from the surface. To explore the viability of this concept, JPL is exploring the issues in preserving a sample during transfer from collection canister to a launch vehicle. This task will breadboard the physical elements of such a chain, retire risk on low-TRL aspects of the chain through demonstration, and provide valuable insight into the sensitivity of resources versus capability. Successful completion of this task will provide a key foundation for subsequent mission architectures and planning.
