Gerry joined the Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s robotics section in the Fall of 1985. While there, he worked on several programs including the NASA Telerobotics Project, Robby the Rover, and robotic surgery. While there, he got the sense that the folks doing the really cool work were the PhDs, so he left JPL to earn his PhD at CMU under the auspices of Dr. William Whittaker, founder/leader of the Field Robotics Center. While at CMU, he worked on two Mars walking robot projects and Dante (which entered the crater of Antarctica’s Mt. Erebus) projects, among others.
Since earning his PhD, Gerry has focused on tech-oriented startups (and he feels that he has been successful in the field because of the broad background he built while working on robots). He has been the CEO of several tech startups, the last one of which was actually acquired; but more recently has been working as a teacher, coach, mentor for those creating their own tech startups.
Gerry has published more than two dozen papers, written several chapters for several books, is a named inventor on ten patents, and recently passed the USPTO bar exam.
