About the same time as the Viking Mars Mission development, JPL began the "1984 Mars Rover" concept effort. Two testbed vehicles were developed, a software prototype and a hardware prototype. Shown is the former, with a simple chassis holding a PDP-11 computer, Stanford arm, and imaging pan-tilt platform.
