Biography (more>>)
Phil grew up bilingual in a Finnish-American household outside Boston Massachusetts. He graduated with a B.S. and M.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University and joined the NASA Jet Propulsion laboratory in 2015. After coming to JPL he originally worked as a robotics engineer on autonomous motion planning software for unmanned surface vehicles.
On InSight, Phil worked on the Instrument Deployment Team, which was responsible for the instrument deployment arm and both cameras. Before launch, he contributed to the testbed V&V and ATLO campaigns. After launch he worked on the operations team as a robotic arm operator and was responsible for the localization of the deployed payloads.
After InSight Phil worked on the Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover with the Flight Systems team supporting the Robotic Arm After landing, he was responsible for the initial Robotic Arm checkout activities, and supported the Robotic Arm Downlink team.
