COMPASS (Core Operations, Mission Planning, and Analysis Spacecraft Simulation), funded by the NASA Johnson Space Center Mission Operations Directorate (JSC-MOD), is to jointly develop the next generation flight-dynamics simulation tool for use in Mission Operations at JSC. JSC-MOD selected the JPL Dynamics and Real-Time Simulation Lab (Darts Lab) to developed Darts/ Dshell/ DSENDS physics-based simulation tool as the basis of this effort. This simulation tool, developed over the last decade at JPL, provides a highly agile, modular software framework that maximizes development flexibility and user capability.
The tool is currently deployed at JPL for a variety of flight projects and R&D applications. An initial delivery of the tool was made in December 2010 together with extensive on-site training at JSC. Subsequently, a joint JPL-JSC team has been working to extend the team for use in Ascent, Descent, Rendezvous and Proximity Operations applications. In FY12 the COMPASS project is to deploy this tool for use in a variety of ascent related analysis as well as International Space Station (ISS) applications.
