The Future Combat Systems (FCS) program, sponsored by the U.S. Army and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), is developing a new generation of mediumweight, manned and unmanned ground and air vehicles to enable rapid deployability around the world. The Government contracted with the team of Boeing and Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) to be the Lead System Integrator (LSI) for the FCS program. The LSI has sought support for development of an Autonomous Navigation System (ANS) to be integrated into the unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs).
General Dynamics Robotics Systems (GDRS) leads a team that provides this support. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) is a member of this GDRS team, supporting design and development of the perception subsystem.
The objective of this task is to apply JPLs unique expertise in remote sensing and perception for autonomous navigation to the design and development system of the perception subsystem for the FCS Autonomous Navigation System. This will include sensors, processors, and algorithms for perceiving the geometry and composition of terrain for day/night, all-weather, off-road navigation.
